Exercise: Find Your Core Values
Think about the times in your life when you were happiest. Take turns, thinking about being happy in your personal life and your professional life. Think about those times. When you were filled with joy and delight, you were so happy you could float. You were shining, everything sounded perfect. What were you doing?
Who you with?
What contributed to your happiness?
Scribble the first things that come to your mind. See what you saw. Hear what you heard, feel whatever you felt.
And when you think about it, you should be smiling. Allow yourself to smile. If you’re doing this properly, then you should be giggling!
At the end of this page I’ve listed some values. Note which of these values resonated with you? Which of these values did you experience?
Was it creativity, love, security, wealth, self esteem? There is no right or wrong. This is about being honest with yourself.
Maybe the reason that you’ve been conflicted is because you have not allowed yourself to really cherish the values that mean most to you. Pick between up to 15.
If you have more than 15 then see which ones can be grouped together, and see if you can give them a collective name.
Okay, now for stage two, I want you to repeat this exercise. But this time, I want you to think of times when you were most proud of yourself.
If you don’t think you’ve experienced this moment, then think when could you have allowed yourself to be most proud? Again, go back and remember, see what you saw. Hear what you heard, feel what you felt, who you were, what were you doing? What were the things that contributed to your happiness?
If you don’t think you’ve experienced this, then when could you have but didn’t at the time? Once you’ve experienced that memory, again, capture up to 15 values.
Onto the final stage. I want to invite you to think about a time when you felt most satisfied and most fulfilled in your life, whether personal or professional.
Again, go back and remember, see what you saw. Hear what you heard, feel what you felt, who you were, what were you doing? What were the things that contributed to your satisfaction and fulfilment?
If you don’t think you’ve experienced this, then when could you have but didn’t at the time. And again, once you once you’ve experienced that memory, capture up to 15 values.
If you have said yourself for any these exercises, well, I’ve never felt pride in myself. I’ve never been fulfilled and satisfied then I want you to imagine or daydream an imaginary scenario where You were all full of pride and satisfaction.
What would you be doing? Who would you be with? There must be some scenario where you imagine experiencing satisfaction or pride. Okay, so now that you have these three lists, what values overlap? Are there any surprises?
Now, combine all three lists for all the exercises into one big list.
Now for the final stage. Take that big list and reduce it down to six values.
One of the ways you can do this is look for values that are similar and group them together. You can give them an overall Name that summarises the group. Then pick one value from that group.
Now, if you still can’t get down to six, then rank them. Start with the most important value and keep going down.
Number one would be the value that resonates, that shines out the most. That’s the one that rings clear to you. The most powerful and number two is the second most important and so on.
Now take the first six from that list.
These are your six core values.
